Back to Nature- Polish Days February

Hello everyone!

Back to Nature- Polish Days February

The tree is inspired by Robin Moses. I learned how to paint a tree in the snow from her Christmas tree nail art tutorial. Only  it's not Christmas. We are just out for a walk by the the forest. It's a regular winter day, a long long time ago. The sun is going down, making a beautiful yellow sunset sky, and the horse is eager to get home... This is what I try to fit into these nails, after being given this months Polish Days theme; "Back to Nature"

If you want information about Polish Days and how to join in, just click on the Polish Days badge :-)

These nails are made by a mix of different techniques; some freehand painting (tree, snow, hare, fox), some stamping (horse), and some sponging (sunset). I used a base of nail polish, and painted with acrylic paint. I was not sure if I should paint the fox, or something else, or just change the snow on my pinky. I included two photos from before the fox was painted too. So now you can see what you like best. What would you have done with the pinky?

After watching Les Miserable, a commercial with a winter setting, and very beautiful sunsets lately, it wasn't difficult to get inspired. I must say I admire people like Bear Grylls and the couple from Man Woman Wild, who travel to different parts of the world and manage to survive alone out in the nature. Although they have tried to teach us all of their tricks, the most important thing I realised/ learned is that I will probably not manage to survive without modern equipment and a house. Even they had to give up, and call their team of helpers a few times... So I have become much more careful, so that I don't get lost or something.

Gina Tricot: #17 Aspen gold

Hello everyone!

Gina Tricot: #17 Aspen gold

Gina Tricot: #17 Aspen gold is a yellow cream nail polish. I used 2- 3 coats and top coat (Seche Vite). I had no issues with this polish, and really like the color. And if you remember my last old bottles of polish post, you know I needed more yellow polishes. Please pretend that the little wound on my finger isn't there.

I found this bottle together with the ones that were on sale after Christmas. But when I was about to pay for it, they said that the price was not reduced, but I had fallen in love with it, so I paid full price even though the price tag was 50% lower... (but this is not an expensive brand, so it's OK)

With all this snow it felt strange to wear a color like this, but when I looked at the bottle to see what it was called, the snow felt appropriate. I guess it's not always snow in Aspen, but in all the movies I've seen that's supposed to be in Aspen, it is. But now, after taking all the snowy photos, I googled Aspen gold, and found out that it's actually a name for a yellow color.

Nostalgic Nail Lacquer: Date at Midnight with Nosferatu

Hello everyone!

This is my first grey with pink glitter (actually my first grey with glitter ever). The glitter is in two shades of pink, hexagonal, and in two pretty small sizes. The polish is called: Date at Midnight with Nosferatu. At first I thought about an Egyptian queen, but she was called Nefertiti, but my boyfriend knew more than me; He remembered Nosferatu from a movie from 1922. The movie is called: Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens. And according to Wikipedia, "nosferatu" is the word for "vampire" in the movie. The rest of the title means; "a symphony of the grey". So it makes sense that the base of the nail polish is grey, especially if it's inspired by a black and white movie. And now I think the cute pink glitter symbolizes blood, but my boyfriend disagrees.

It's also my first Nostalgic Nail Lacquer bottle. I was wondering if this indie brand was cruelty- free, and found this written on the website: All lacquers are created by me, in my home, with high quality pigments, micas, glitter, and dibutyl phthalate, formaldehyde and toluene free bases. They are cruelty free unless otherwise noted. So, when I looked up the polish, and nothing was mentioned about testing on animals, I bought it, and received it in December.

For all these photos, except for the next 3 photos, I used 3 coats, and a fourth on my index finger, and top coat. I used one thin coat and two thick ones. Just to show you how sheer it is, I'll show you what 1, 2, and 3 coats looks like. But look how shiny it looks!

2 coats:

3 coats + Seche Vite:

I felt that the third coat covered some of the glitter particles. But later, when I did a mistake during stamping, I used acetone to remove the top layers. And I saw that the hidden glitter emerged. I had heard about this technique, but never tried it because I thought the cotton would leave too many hairs in the polish.

I liked this nail polish a lot. I would recommend to remove glitter that ends up outside your nails, before each coat dries, or it will take time to get it off your skin. When I tested the polish on my nail wheel, I thought it had to be used as a layering polish, but wanted to try it once on it's own first. I kind of liked wearing it like this, but now I can see how much of the nail polish I have used... so I'll probably layer it over grey to not empty the bottle too quickly.

Sat-ART-Day Club: Amethyst Pattern Skittle

Hello everyone!

The Sat- ART- Day Club has started again, and this first Saturday we are all making an amethyst pattern skittle. I chose to use my amethyst magnetic nail polish; Deborah Lippmann Berry Metal, and used five different magnets to make a different pattern on each nail. As usual you can find thumbnails with links to all the participants' amethyst pattern skittles at he end of the post.

Amethyst Pattern Skittle

I've written about Berry Metal from the Steal My Kisses set earlier. To see it, click here.

Here are the magnets I used:

Magnets used for the Amethyst Pattern Skittle

Magnets:
IsaDora- horizontal stripe pattern: thumb
Deborah Lippmann- magnetic wave design: index finger
IsaDora- star pattern: middle finger
China Glaze Magnetix II: ring finger
IsaDora- diagonal stripe pattern: pinkie

Deborah Lippmann describes the color of Berry Metal as amethyst. Here you can see how close the color of the amethyst stone is to the color of the nail polish.

Nail Art for Cervix Cancer Awareness

Hello everyone!

Today I want to show you this stamping nail art that I made for cervix cancer awareness. In some countries January is the month for cervix cancer awareness. First I'm going to tell what I know about preventing this type of cancer and the importance of HPV vaccination and regular gynecological examinations, and then I'll tell about my teal nails. I also found a little video for you, that I felt was informative. So feel free to scroll down to the video.

According to the WHO (World Health Organization): The second most common cancer in women worldwide, cervical cancer affects close to half a million women every year, killing an estimated 275 000 of them. About 77% of new cases and 85% of deaths occur in the developing world, where cancer screening and treatment services are scarce.

Luckily, this is a type of cancer where research has given us a way to prevent it, and to detect the cancer early, and that can save many lives. We now know that a virus is the cause to 99% of the cases. The virus that gives cervical cancer is called the HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS (HPV). Many types of HPV exists. Of the ones that has to do with cervical cancer, some of them are more aggressive than others. In many cases, the body is capable of getting rid of the viruses. Therefor most women with HPV don't develop cervical cancer. Some HPV viruses can make the cells in the cervix change slowly, and other viruses can make the cells change very fast. Any man or woman who has had any form of sex can get the virus. In some cases it can give genital warts, but other than that the virus has no symptoms. The good thing about finding the link between HPV and cervix cancer, is that vaccines could be made. So far, two HPV vaccines have been made, and used for some years, and probably saved many women's lives. Hopefully they will make vaccines that work for all types of HPV soon.

What can you do?

1. Get vaccinated

-According to WHO, the two HPV vaccines currently available, are: GlaxoSmithKline’s Cervarix and Merck’s Gardasil. For more information, click here.
- The vaccines work against the HPV viruses that give the highest risk for cancer. So you can still get the other types of HPV viruses. So although the risk for cervix cancer is reduced, you still should get gynecological examinations done regularly.
-  In many countries all girls who are about 12 years old get vaccinated, and all young women of a certain age can get vaccinated if they want to, and those older can get it but have to pay for it themselves. (I don't know if they have started mass vaccination of boys anywhere yet.) You should ask your physician how it is in your country, if you or your daughters can get it.

2. Get gynecological examinations regularly to

A) take the HPV test to find out if you have HPV or not, and in case you have it, which type of HPV. This is important because it will let your physician know how big the risk is, and how often you should get gynecological examinations (for instance twice a year instead of every second year). If you for instance have a high risk virus, it's important to be aware of it, so that you make sure to get examined often enough to detect cell changes early enough. (Some countries have stopped performing the HPV test (although it is very quick and easy to do) because it's considered too expensive to give it to all women compared to the preventive effect, so the woman may have to pay for it. But all this is depends on where in the world you are)

B) find out if the cells in the cervix are normal, and if you have an early stage of cancer. In some countries they store your samples, so that they can compare them every third year or something.

Even though most of us don't like the examination, it only takes a few minutes, and it can save your life. Although the gynecologists disagree on the importance of HPV testing, they seem to agree on regular tests of the cells in cervix.

If the cervix cancer is detected very early, the prognosis is very good.

A woman I know told me that she had a very early stage of cell change, and that she needed a small operation. This was done by a local gynecologist with local anesthesia, it was done very quickly, she had no pain, and I was surprised that she felt OK afterwards, and could go home as if nothing had happened. This is now many years ago and she is still healthy. The reason why it went so well, is probably that it was detected early, because she had gynecological tests done regularly.
The other woman I know had this small operation done when she was in her twenties, and she thought that she couldn't get pregnant, but now has two children.

As with other types of cancer, early detection and early treatment is important, or the cancer can grow and  spread to other organs.

Here's a video from Australia, called: Just a Minute - Cervical Cancer video.

For more information about cervix cancer, here is a link: Cancer Connect .

For this stamping nail art, I used:

Pieces: Aqua Blue Metallic (2 coats)
Gina Tricot: #76 Brilliant blue (for stamping)
Messy Mansion stamping plate: MM02 (bubbles)
Bundle Monster stamping plate: BM- 321 (ribbon)
IsaDora: Clear (base coat)
Seche Vite (top coat)

I started with base coat, and applied top coat before stamping, and after stamping. I'm still quite new at stamping, so this was not perfect, but I like this mani a lot.

If you want to see more nail art for cervical cancer awareness, take a look at what was made for Twinsie Tuesday, January 22nd.
